St. Louis Souvenir March

This photo detail extracted from the cover of the St. Louis Souvenir March by Alfonso Hart, was taken before the exposition grounds were completed, in order to necessitate timely publication of the piece. This is a photo of crews putting finishing works on the promenade where the famous fountains were located, and the grand Festival Hall off in the distance, from which emerged the water works that inspired Scott Joplin to write his own exposition piece, The Cascades. You can see that there is no water in the pools yet, and that there is scaffolding still in place to complete the statutory work. It should be noted that Joplin's Cascades did not include a picture of the famous waterfall until it was printed in its second edition, after the waterways were complete and the exposition had opened.
